China has advised India to completely distance itself from the process of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation and the selection of his successor. Beijing has made it clear that this matter is strictly its internal affair. Additionally, China has urged India not to provide a platform or encouragement for political activities related to Tibetan independence on its soil.

Diplomatic tensions between India and China have resurfaced over the legacy of the Dalai Lama. Issuing a warning, the Chinese government stated that the entire process of choosing the next Dalai Lama falls within Beijing’s jurisdiction, and no foreign interference will be tolerated.

Official Stance of the Chinese Embassy

Yu Jing, the spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, issued an official statement regarding the matter. She stated that the system of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation is based on centuries-old religious beliefs, historical traditions, and established rituals. The final approval and endorsement of China’s central government are mandatory for this entire process.

The spokesperson argued that the current 14th Dalai Lama was also recognized under this historical Chinese governing tradition. Furthermore, dismissing the legitimacy of the exiled Tibetan government, known as the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), China stated that the organization is not recognized by any sovereign nation in the world. Therefore, it holds no legal or moral right to claim authority over the reincarnation process.

How Does the Reincarnation of the Dalai Lama Take Place?

Notably, following the failure of the 1959 uprising against Chinese control in Tibet, the Dalai Lama had to seek refuge in India. Currently, approximately 70,000 Tibetan refugees reside in various parts of India.

According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the search for the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation begins after his Mahaparinirvana (passing away). Senior Buddhist monks identify potential divine children based on signs received at the time of death, spiritual dreams, and astrological calculations. Following this, these children undergo rigorous tests, which include identifying objects used by the previous Dalai Lama. The child who meets all the criteria is recognized as the true reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and is subsequently given the highest religious education.

Sensitivity of India-China Relations

Foreign policy experts believe that the Dalai Lama’s presence on Indian soil provides New Delhi with significant strategic leverage against Beijing. This is precisely why the question of the Dalai Lama’s succession has consistently remained a highly sensitive and geopolitically crucial issue in bilateral relations between the two countries.

In its statement, China also emphasized that India must not allow its territory to be used for campaigns related to Tibetan independence, as such activities could damage bilateral ties and impact regional peace and stability.
