India surpassed its Tokyo 2020 Paralympic performance by winning a total of 29 medals at the Paris 2024 Games. The country secured seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze medals, finishing 18th in the overall medal tally. The achievement reflects the growing strength and global recognition of Indian para-athletes.
Expanded Participation And New Sports
India participated in 12 disciplines, compared to nine at Tokyo 2020, and made its debut in three new sports: para-cycling, para-rowing, and blind judo. The Paris Paralympics took place from August 28 to September 8, with 84 Indian athletes representing the country. The wider participation and inclusion of new categories have helped India earn more medals than ever before.
Notable Medal Winners
Several athletes delivered historic performances. Javelin thrower Sumit Antil, who has a left leg amputation, outpaced his own record to win another gold medal. Avani Lekhar secured two medals in the air rifle SH1 final, while Sheetal, at just 17, became India’s youngest Paralympic medallist by winning bronze in the mixed-team event with Rakesh.
In judo, Kapil Parmar won bronze in the men’s 60kg J1 class, marking India’s debut success in the sport. Harvinder Singh made history as India’s first Paralympic archery champion. India’s final medal of the Games was won by Navdeep Singh in men’s javelin throw F41 classification. Initially winning silver with a throw of 47.32m, he was later upgraded to gold following the disqualification of Iran’s Beit Sadegh.
Recognition And National Pride
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indian para-athletes on X (formerly Twitter), calling the achievement special and historical. He said, “India is overjoyed that our incredible para-athletes have brought home 29 medals, the best-ever performance since India’s debut at the Games. This achievement is due to the unwavering dedication and indomitable spirit of our athletes. Their sporting performances have inspired many upcoming athletes.”
