GLASGOW
India has made a powerful start at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing three medals:one gold, one silver, and one bronze, while guaranteeing a fourth. The Indian team has showcased exceptional strength and determination, with historic lifts and record-breaking performances leading the charge.

Leading the triumph is Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu, who clinched India’s first gold of the Games in the women’s 48kg weightlifting category. Delivering a dominant performance, Chanu shattered both the Games and Commonwealth records with the best lift of 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, achieving an overall total of 190kg. This victory marks her hat-trick of Commonwealth Games gold.

In the men’s weightlifting division, Rishikanta Singh Chanambam brought home India’s first silver medal in the 60kg category. Singh’s stellar performance also included setting a new Games record in the snatch, further cementing India’s growing stature in weightlifting on the international stage.

The nation’s medal account at Glasgow was officially opened by para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar, who secured a hard-fought bronze in the men’s heavyweight final. Kumar lifted the best of 190kg, giving India its first-ever para powerlifting medal at the Glasgow Games.
Beyond the weightlifting and powerlifting arenas, India is already assured of a boxing medal. Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain is guaranteed at least a bronze in the women’s 75kg category after receiving a direct entry into the semifinals via a bye.
With the Games just getting underway, India’s brilliant start sets a promising tone as the 126 member contingent looks to add more medals to the tally in the coming days.
