
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Giorgia Meloni in Rome on issues related to the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. Both countries agreed to elevate their ties to a “Special Strategic Partnership” and strengthen cooperation in defense, trade, and agriculture.
New Delhi -During the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Rome on Wednesday, India and Italy announced the elevation of their bilateral relations to a “Special Strategic Partnership” at a high-level meeting. Prime Minister Modi stated that India and Italy remain in constant contact regarding the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. Both nations agreed to enhance cooperation in defense, trade, agriculture, technology, and global issues.
India–Italy Relations Elevated to a Special Strategic Partnership
During the meeting, India and Italy announced the elevation of their bilateral ties to a “Special Strategic Partnership.” Both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in defense, technology, clean energy, trade, innovation, and people-to-people relations. Several agreements were signed, including a “Defense Industrial Roadmap,” cooperation on critical minerals, and measures to combat economic crimes.
The issue of terrorism was also discussed during the meeting. According to an ANI report, Prime Minister Modi described terrorism as “a serious challenge for humanity” and stated that “our joint efforts against terror financing have set an important example before the world.”
Cooperation to Expand in Agriculture, Indo-Pacific, and Africa
Both countries signed new agreements in the field of agriculture and agricultural research, which will promote collaboration between ministries and research institutions. In the joint statement, India and Italy supported a free, open, and peaceful Indo-Pacific region in accordance with international law and UNCLOS.
The two nations will also enhance trilateral cooperation with African countries in areas such as digital public infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare, artificial intelligence, connectivity, and renewable energy.
Focus on Indian Community and Economic Partnership
Prime Minister Modi stated that more than 800 Italian companies are operating in India and contributing to the country’s economic progress. He appreciated Prime Minister Meloni’s support in advancing the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement.
The Prime Minister described the Indian community living in Italy as a “living bridge” between the two countries. He added that the Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement has increased opportunities for education, employment, and cultural exchange.
FAO Honors Prime Minister Modi with “Agricola Medal”
During his Rome visit, Prime Minister Modi was awarded the 2026 “Agricola Medal” by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The honor was given in recognition of India’s contribution to global food security, sustainable agriculture, and the vision of a hunger-free world.
Modi also thanked the FAO for its support in promoting millets. He said that India would continue to move forward on the path of peace, cooperation, and human welfare.
