The second term of the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump has started to take power. The new US President on November 12, 2024, announced the appointment of Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday along with Indian-origin Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Both Ramaswamy and Musk have served as close allies of Trump in his presidential campaign.

What is DOGE?

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is a new initiative under the reign of Trump 2.0. The primary aim of this association will be to monitor the State bureaucracy and provide the government with advice and measures to dismantle  Government Bureaucracy cut down on regulatory expenditures and help structure the revised federal agencies.

Trump has particularly emphasized “massive waste and fraud” within the federal government’s $6.5 trillion budget. Trump has also set a deadline for DOGE to accomplish its target. The time set is  July 4, 2026, America’s 250th Independence Day. The organization is not a governmental association but will serve as an important attribute of Trump’s bureaucracy.

What DOGE means for the US?

Trump made an important statement in his election campaigns in September highlighting how “fraud and improper payments alone cost taxpayers an estimated hundreds of billions of dollars in 2022 under the presidency of Joe Biden. He has pledged a majority of his electoral campaign promising Americans to sweep taxes, The world awaits his policies as he takes charge in the US as the President from January 2025. So, DOGE comes as a step in fulfilling his promises, and the deadline set on Independence Day holds the enormity Trump has set in.

Trump has said in a statement, “Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.”

Why did Trump Bring in Musk and Ramaswamy?

Musk became a major supporter of Trump in the final leg of his presidential bid, appearing on the campaign trail and spending more than $100 million on organizing efforts through his super PAC, “America PAC.” His political contributions went on to surpass the total amount of public donations from the entire oil industry.

Trump has received funding of more than $100 billion from Elon Musk in his presidential bid. The President had vouched for transparency on Government Efficiency and similar statements have been made by Musk. He said at a Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in October that the federal budget could be reduced by “at least” $2 trillion. “Your money is being wasted and the Department of Government Efficiency is going to fix that. We’re going to get the government off your back and out of your pocketbook,” Musk said at the rally.

Ramaswamy, the founder of a pharmaceutical company, competed for the Republican presidential nomination against Trump and then backed the former president after dropping out. Bringing in a biotech entrepreneur is a strategic move by Trump. He has previously called for the termination of 75% of federal employees, which would result in around 1.6 million layoffs. His targets are the FBI, the Department of Education, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
