Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a special economic package worth USD 175 million for Seychelles, aimed at supporting major development and security-related projects across key sectors.

The announcement was made during a joint press interaction with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie in New Delhi, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two Indian Ocean partners.

Focus on Housing, Mobility, Skills and Security

Prime Minister Modi said the financial package will support concrete and people-centric projects in Seychelles, including social housing, e-mobility, vocational training, healthcare, defence and maritime security.

He stressed that India’s development partnership with Seychelles remains a strong pillar of the bilateral relationship, with initiatives aligned to the needs and priorities of the island nation. Modi added that the new package is expected to generate employment and skill training opportunities, especially for the youth of Seychelles.

Golden Jubilee Year for Diplomatic Relations

Modi highlighted that President Herminie’s visit comes at a key moment as India and Seychelles mark 50 years of diplomatic relations. He said the milestone provides an opportunity to deepen ties further and take the partnership to new heights.

The Prime Minister said India and Seychelles share a unique connection through the Indian Ocean, noting that trade links have expanded and cultural bonds have grown stronger over time.

Maritime Cooperation Under MAHASAGAR Vision

Modi described Seychelles as a trusted maritime neighbour and an important partner under India’s MAHASAGAR vision. He said cooperation between the two nations spans across land, water and sea, reflecting their shared strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region.

He also acknowledged the contribution of the Indian community in Seychelles, stating that they have played an important role in the country’s social and economic progress while strengthening people-to-people ties across generations.

Bilateral Talks Held at Hyderabad House

Earlier in the day, Modi and President Herminie held bilateral talks at Hyderabad House. During his visit, the Seychelles President also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

The Ministry of External Affairs said on X that Gandhi’s principles continue to guide and inspire the India–Seychelles partnership.

President Herminie arrived in New Delhi on Sunday after completing engagements in Chennai and Mumbai. This is his first visit to India since taking office in October 2025, and it coincides with the golden jubilee celebrations of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
