Ukraine has signed a landmark defence deal with France to purchase 100 Rafale F4 fighter jets and next-generation air defence systems. The pact also includes joint development of interceptor drones and critical defence technologies, strengthening Ukraine’s military capabilities amid ongoing security challenges.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron signed a historic defence cooperation agreement on Monday at Villacoublay airbase near Paris. The deal includes the purchase of 100 advanced Rafale F4 fighter jets over the next decade, marking a significant step in Ukraine’s efforts to modernise its armed forces.

The agreement also covers a new generation of the Franco-Italian SAMP/T surface-to-air missile defence system, air defence radar, air-to-air missiles, and aerial bombs. Zelensky and Macron emphasised that a strong Ukrainian military is essential for ensuring long-term security and for supporting any potential peace agreement with Russia in the future.

Rafale Jets and Missile Systems
The Rafale F4, built by Dassault Aviation, is a twin-engine multi-role fighter. This new version bridges the gap between older fourth-generation jets and the latest fifth-generation Rafale, offering enhanced capabilities for Ukraine’s air combat units. Macron confirmed that Ukraine would be the first to receive the next-generation SAMP/T missile batteries once they are ready.

Joint Drone Projects
The agreement also sets the stage for cooperation between the Ukrainian and French defence industries in drone development. Zelensky highlighted plans to jointly produce interceptor drones designed to neutralise enemy drones without explosives. The collaboration will include work on critical technologies and components for future Ukrainian drones, strengthening the country’s defensive capabilities.

Strategic Partnership
The defence pact builds on ongoing cooperation between the two nations in areas including energy, economy, and security. Both leaders described the deal as a historic breakthrough for Ukraine, providing access to advanced defence equipment and reinforcing the bilateral relationship in military and technological domains.
